Alexander Currie Trophy Presentation

The Alexander Currie Trophy was presented to Sports Union President, Marina Sergeeva, on Monday 2nd May at Sport & Exercise Pleasance.

The trophy is in memoriam of Honorary Vice President and dedicated supporter of university sport, Alex Currie. It was donated by his wife, Pamela, who has been working on getting the trophy produced since last summer.

The trophy will be awarded to the recipient of the Most Inspiring Performance of the Year prize at the Blues & Colours ceremony on 31st May.

Currie was Secretary of the University of Edinburgh for 15 years and instrumental in creating a fairer, standard university application process that became what we know today as UCAS. He passed away in 2014 having had a long and distinguished career in the Higher Education sector.

Edinburgh University Sports Union President, Marina Sergeeva, said, “The Sports Union is honoured to accept this trophy from Pamela. It is a great way to celebrate Alex’s legacy and inspire the same level of dedication to student sport among our members. The award recipient will be selected from a shortlist by students at this University, allowing for them to decide on the most inspirational moment of the year.”

Pamela said, “It gives me very great pleasure to give this trophy to the Sports Union in memory of my husband, Alex Currie, former Secretary to the University of Edinburgh.

I very much wanted to recognise his long link with the EUSU over the years and I have commissioned this lovely cup from Hamilton and Inches, to be presented in his name at the Annual Blues Dinner, as a fitting way of doing that.”
