Gym Instructor (Level 2)

Join us for the very latest next generation of YMCA L2 Gym qualification, meeting industry requirements to become a Gym Instructor, as set out within the CIMSPA professional standard. This qualification is designed to make the assessment more relevant to the job roles learners will take on when qualified.

Sport & Exercise, at the University of Edinburgh, are an approved YMCA Centre and delivers various CIMSPA-endorsed instructor courses.  

The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills to engage, facilitate, educate, instruct, and support clients in a gym or health club environment.

Content

Learners will cover underpinning knowledge and skills for exercise and fitness instructors including:

• Fundamentals of anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness professionals
• Providing a positive customer experience to exercise and fitness participants
• Principles of physical activity, exercise, and training approaches to develop fitness and health
• Health screening, risk stratification and scope of practice
• Health awareness and lifestyle management

Learners will also cover knowledge and skills related to supporting clients in a gym environment, including:

• Consultation, assessment and induction processes in a gym-based environment
• Maintaining safety and hygiene in the gym-based environment
• Using client information to plan gym-based exercise
• Principles for planning and designing gym-based exercise for a range of clients
• Delivering gym-based exercise sessions
• Reviewing sessions and reflecting on practice

Format & assessment

This course is tutor-led and delivered over four full days (9am to 5pm). Following registration, you will receive course materials.

The summative Practical Gym instructing assessment takes place at the end of the course. You are only required to attend one of the instructing assessment dates for approximately 2.5 hours for your assessment and your partners.
