Gym Instructor (Level 2)

Sport & Exercise, at the University of Edinburgh, are an approved YMCA Centre and delivers various CIMSPA-endorsed instructor courses.  

By completing this qualification, you will meet industry requirements to become a Gym Instructor, as set out within the CIMSPA professional standard.

The purpose of this qualification is to enable learners to develop the knowledge and skills to engage, facilitate, educate and support clients in a gym or health club environment.

Completing this qualification allows learners to access Gym Instructor jobs.

Content

  • How to maintain health, safety and welfare in various fitness environments.
  • How to program safe and effective exercise for a range of clients.
  • How to communicate with and motivate clients.
  • How to plan a gym-based exercise program using cardiovascular equipment, fixed and free weights and bodyweight exercises.
  • How to effectively deliver one-to-one gym-based sessions, consultations and group inductions.

Format & assessment

This course is tutor-led and delivered over four full days (9am to 5pm). Following registration, you will receive course materials. 

Assessment involves 7 elements including a theory assessment, on-course formative instructing and a summative practical instructing assessment plus workbooks and other written course work.

The theory assessment is a 45-minute multiple-choice paper (30 questions): Applied anatomy and physiology for exercise and fitness instructors. 

You will be practically assessed for this course by delivering a one-to-one exercise consultation (approximately 15 minutes) and a gym instructing session (approximately 45 minutes). You are only required to attend one of the instructing assessment dates for approximately 2-3 hours.
